This dried flower currently resides on a shelf near my desk as part of my work area. I didn’t put it there, but I’m not about to throw it away. I’m not one of those people who fills up all available desk space at work with knickknacks and pictures. My personal things stay where they mean the most to me: at home. Sure, I have pictures that I use for wallpaper on my computer monitors, and I also have a few baubles here and there, but they’re mostly work-type stuff with only a hint of insight into what I like outside of work. I guess my fear is that if I make my office a place that’s more like home, I’ll end up spending more time there. You could make the argument that if I have to spend a lot of time there, I should fill it with things that make me happy, but I’d rather have home as the goal. Finish work, go home, and leave all the stress behind.

There are weekends where we don’t do anything. Chores? Forget it. How’s the weather outside? I have no idea. Then there are weekends when we’re fed up with everything around us and we decide to do something. This past weekend, we attacked our closet and filled up these bins with clothes for eventual donation to people who need it more than we do. There’s no reason I should be holding on to pants that are too big for me, or belts that are too small. Looking at these bins gives us a great feeling of accomplishment.

In an attempt to prevent another stupid mistake I might make, I tried to copy a DVD of our honeymoon pictures. This past Easter, I burned a slideshow of honeymoon pictures to take over to my aunt’s house, taken from a group of pictures I put into a folder when I made a DVD for Kristin’s parents. After my hard drive disaster, I was thankful that even if all of our pictures were lost, we would still have the DVD. I wanted to see if I could maybe pull the pictures from the slideshow, or at the very least, make a copy of the DVD. Evidently, I was wrong on both counts. Although the DVD runs fine, a section of it would not copy, neither to another DVD nor to my hard drive. At this point, until my external comes back with all my pictures, our honeymoon only exists on two DVDs and in our memories.

My intention was to capture the look of the aftermath of an early afternoon, quick-moving, summertime thunderstorm. As I drove out of the office park, the humid air swirled with the steam created when the rain hit the hot asphalt. Everything was green and lush, and that earthy smell that only exists when the sun comes out after a thunderstorm filled my car as soon as I opened the window. Even though I consider autumn my favorite season, times like these remind me why I love summer.

I don’t know when exactly garlic became the go-to food in our household. It seems like every time we make something for dinner, garlic edges its way into the recipe, and always makes it better. The other ingredients think garlic is the bee’s knees and consider it the life of the party. Apparently garlic tells the best stories and knows all the latest dance moves. Sure, garlic’s reputation might have been a bit questionable in the past, what with the whole olfactory situation, but most consider the aroma intoxicating nowadays once it simmers up with a little olive oil. Really, who am I to judge? Garlic’s always been a pretty good friend.

We have so many tomatoes in the house, between the farmer’s market, my sister’s garden, and the grocery store. Looks like we’re in for a lot of vegetables for dinner this week. I guess it could be worse. I could be coming home to peanut butter sandwiches for dinner. Not that I have anything against peanut butter sandwiches, mind you. Actually, something tells me that after a week of eating tomato-based dinners, I may want a peanut butter sandwich to break up the pattern.

It’s always sad when there’s only one egg left in the refrigerator. Sure, if I lived alone and wanted a quick breakfast, one egg would be all I need. This isn’t the case. One egg means we need to find a specific recipe or buy another dozen, which may lead back to this exact same situation in another week or two. It’s a vicious cycle.

Yes, I definitely feel poorer, but I’m back into the world of technology. With my old laptop dead, I’ve had to rely on Kristin’s phone or laptop to do something as simple as check e-mail. We both realized that couldn’t last, especially if Kristin had to go out of town for work. Although I have been getting a lot of reading done, I needed a computer. So, now I’ve got some nifty new gadgets. Sure, they’ll be obsolete next week, but maybe they’ll give me a good half decade of use before something goes haywire and I have to repeat this costly process all over again.

Since there’s a minor league baseball nearby, we decided to pony up the sixteen or so bucks and go to a baseball game. In the past, we’ve gone to the beach or Red Bank to watch the fireworks on Fourth of July weekend, but this year we only wanted to deal with organized chaos (meaning there’s still a lot of people, but at least we have our own seats). Beautiful day, good game, and I’m really glad we didn’t buy the seats on the other side of the stadium, otherwise we would have been ridiculously sunburned and possibly blind from having to stare toward the sun all afternoon. So, yeah, good day.
